Beginner's Guide To Vaping: What Vaping Is and How It Works

This beginner's guide to vaping explains what a vape is, how to choose your first device, which e-liquid and nicotine strength suit you, and how to set everything up safely. If you smoke and want to switch, you will find a clear, UK-specific path below. We run The British Vapes from Birmingham, and we have helped smokers across the UK move to vaping since 2022, so every step reflects questions we answer every day.

Written by the team at The British Vapes. Last reviewed October 2026. For adult smokers aged 18 and over.

To start vaping you need three things: a device (a pod kit or a pen kit), an e-liquid with the right nicotine strength, and a charger. Most new vapers who switch from cigarettes do best with a mouth-to-lung pod kit and a nic salt e-liquid. Vaping is for adult smokers. Non-smokers and anyone under 18 should not start.

What is vaping?

Vaping means inhaling vapour from a battery-powered device that heats e-liquid. It is not smoking, because nothing burns. The NHS describes vapes as devices that let you inhale nicotine in an aerosol, or vapour, instead of smoke.

A vape heats a liquid made from propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), flavouring and, in most cases, nicotine. Cigarettes release thousands of chemicals when tobacco burns, including tar and carbon monoxide. A vape does not burn tobacco, so it does not produce either of those. That single difference explains why UK health bodies treat vaping as a far less harmful option for adult smokers.

How does a vape work?

A vape works when a battery powers a coil that heats e-liquid into vapour you inhale. Every device, from a simple pod kit to an advanced mod, uses the same basic parts.

  • Battery: supplies power to the coil. Most beginner kits use a built-in rechargeable battery that charges over USB-C.
  • Coil: a small heating element wrapped in cotton. It heats the e-liquid and wears out over time.
  • Pod or tank: holds the e-liquid. Pods click into the device, while tanks screw on.
  • E-liquid: the liquid that carries flavour and nicotine.
  • Airflow and mouthpiece: control how the vapour feels as you inhale.

When you draw on the mouthpiece, the device senses airflow (or you press a button) and the coil heats the cotton that holds the e-liquid. The liquid turns into vapour and travels to your mouth.

Is a vape the same as an e-cigarette?

Yes. A vape, a vaporiser and an e-cigarette all describe the same type of product. The names changed as devices evolved from cigarette-shaped models to pods, pens and mods.

You will also see "vape kit" and "starter kit". These simply mean a complete device that includes the battery and the pod or tank, ready to use once you add e-liquid.

Is Vaping Safer Than Smoking?

Yes. The NHS states that nicotine vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it is not risk-free. The long-term effects are still unknown, and the healthiest choice is to neither smoke nor vape.

Smoking exposes you to tar, carbon monoxide and up to 70 known cancer-causing chemicals. Vape aerosol contains far fewer toxins, and at much lower levels. The NHS explains this in its guide to vaping to quit smoking, which also reports that you are roughly twice as likely to quit smoking with a nicotine vape than with other nicotine replacement products such as patches or gum.

Is nicotine harmful?

Nicotine is addictive, but it does not cause the cancers, lung disease and heart disease linked to smoking. Those harms come mainly from tar and the other chemicals in tobacco smoke. Nicotine does affect your heart rate and blood pressure, so speak to your GP if you have a heart condition before you switch.

Who should not start vaping?

Vaping is a tool for adult smokers. You should not start if you are under 18 or if you have never smoked. In the UK, you must be 18 or over to buy a vape. If you are pregnant, the NHS recommends licensed nicotine replacement therapy as the first choice, and says vaping is still safer than continuing to smoke if it helps you stay smoke-free.

Health note

This guide offers general information, not medical advice. If you want personal support, your local NHS Stop Smoking Service can match you with a plan and, in some areas, a free vaping starter pack.

What Types of Vape Kits Can Beginners Choose?

Beginners can choose between prefilled pod kits, refillable pod kits and vape pen kits. Each type suits a different level of effort, cost and control.

All three types sit inside our vape starter kits range. Here is how they compare.

Kit type How it works Best for Upkeep
Prefilled pod kit You click in a pod that arrives already filled with e-liquid People who want the simplest routine Replace the pod when it runs out and recharge the battery
Refillable pod kit You fill the pod with e-liquid you choose People who want flavour and strength choice at a lower running cost Refill the pod, replace it or the coil every so often
Vape pen kit You fill a tank and use a replaceable coil People who want a larger tank and a more traditional setup Refill the tank and change the coil

Prefilled pod kits

A prefilled pod kit is the easiest way to start vaping. You insert a sealed pod, charge the battery and start using it straight away.

There is no e-liquid to pour and no coil to change, because each pod includes its own coil. Browse our prefilled pod kits if you want a simple, low-maintenance routine. Many UK smokers who used to rely on single-use vapes choose this format because it feels familiar.

Refillable pod kits

A refillable pod kit lets you choose your own e-liquid and costs less to run over time. You fill the pod yourself and replace it when the flavour fades.

This format gives you control over flavour and nicotine strength. Our vape pod kits collection covers compact devices that work well with nic salts. When your pod wears out, you can buy refillable vape pods and replacement vape pods for your exact device.

Vape pen kits

A vape pen kit pairs a rechargeable battery with a refillable tank and a replaceable coil. It holds more e-liquid than most pods, so you refill less often.

Pen kits suit people who like a slim, pen-style shape and a longer gap between refills. Explore vape pen kits if you want that classic format. If you later want more control over power and airflow, you can move up to vape mods, but we do not recommend them for a first device.

Are disposable vapes still an option?

No. Businesses cannot sell or supply single-use vapes in the UK since 1 June 2025. Reusable devices with replaceable pods or refillable tanks are the legal alternative.

GOV.UK sets out the definitions in its single-use vapes ban guidance. If you smoked or vaped a disposable before, our disposable vape alternatives give you a similar, easy experience in a reusable device. Our article on the UK disposable vape ban and the best legal alternatives explains your options in detail, and our comparison of prefilled pods vs disposables shows how the running costs differ.

How Do You Choose Your First Vape Kit?

Choose a mouth-to-lung (MTL) pod kit with a built-in rechargeable battery if you are switching from cigarettes. It copies the way you already inhale, and it is simple to use.

What is the difference between MTL and DTL vaping?

MTL (mouth to lung) means you draw vapour into your mouth first and then inhale. DTL (direct to lung) means you inhale straight into your lungs. MTL feels like smoking a cigarette, and DTL produces larger clouds.

MTL devices have tighter airflow and work best with higher-strength nic salts. DTL devices, often called sub ohm kits, use lower-strength e-liquid in larger amounts. They need more knowledge to use well, so most beginners who smoke start with MTL.

What should you look for in a beginner vape kit?

  • Simple operation: auto-draw (no button) or one button, with few settings to change.
  • Battery size: pick a kit that lasts a full day of your normal use. Heavier users benefit from larger batteries and USB-C fast charging.
  • Pod capacity: UK rules limit tank and pod size to 2ml, so check how quickly you will need to refill.
  • Easy refills and spare parts: choose a brand with pods and coils that you can reorder easily.
  • Reputable UK retailer: the NHS advises buying from a reputable retailer so your product meets UK safety and quality rules.

Our pick for most beginners

Start with a simple MTL pod kit and a 10mg or 20mg nic salt, depending on how much you smoke. Choose a prefilled kit if you want no setup, or a refillable kit if you want lower running costs and more flavour choice.

Which E-Liquid and Nicotine Strength Should a Beginner Use?

Most beginners who smoke daily start with a nic salt e-liquid between 10mg and 20mg. Light smokers often choose 5mg to 10mg. The right strength is the one that stops your cravings without making you feel dizzy or nauseous.

The NHS advises that you start at a nicotine level that matches how often and how much you smoke. Too little nicotine leaves you craving a cigarette, and too much can cause headaches or nausea. If you are unsure, the table below shows common starting points used across UK vape shops.

Your smoking habit Typical nic salt strength Typical freebase strength
Heavy: around 20 or more cigarettes a day, or a cigarette within 30 minutes of waking 20mg 12mg to 18mg
Moderate: around 10 to 20 cigarettes a day 10mg to 20mg 6mg to 12mg
Light: fewer than 10 cigarettes a day 5mg to 10mg 3mg to 6mg

Treat these as starting points, not medical advice. Adjust up or down after a few days. A UK Stop Smoking adviser or our team can help you fine-tune it. If you want a second opinion, contact The British Vapes team for nicotine guidance.

What are nic salts and why do beginners use them?

Nic salts are a form of nicotine that feels smoother at higher strengths, which makes them ideal for people switching from cigarettes. They deliver nicotine quickly and suit small MTL pod kits.

Our nic salt e-liquids come in 10ml bottles, and you can find them in popular flavours like menthol, tobacco and fruit. If you want to try several flavours, the 10ml e-liquids range lets you test before you commit to a favourite.

What is freebase nicotine and when should you use it?

Freebase nicotine is the traditional form of e-liquid nicotine, and it works best in lower strengths and in larger, higher-powered kits. Most beginners do not need it at first.

Freebase e-liquid has a stronger throat hit at high strengths, so it is usually sold in 3mg to 18mg. Look at our freebase nicotine e-liquids if you prefer that feel or you plan to use a pen kit.

What are shortfills and nicotine shots?

A shortfill is a large bottle of nicotine-free e-liquid with space left for you to add nicotine shots. You mix the two to reach your preferred strength.

UK rules cap nicotine e-liquid bottles at 10ml, so larger bottles are sold nicotine-free. You can browse shortfill e-liquids and add nicotine shots to create your own strength. This route usually suits people who have already vaped for a while and use larger tanks.

How do you choose a flavour?

Pick a flavour you enjoy, not one that copies tobacco. Many people who switch begin with tobacco or menthol, then move to fruit flavours after a week or two. That change is common and can help you stay away from cigarettes. If you are unsure, start with a flavour from our full range of vape e-liquids.

How Do You Start Vaping Step by Step?

To start vaping, charge your device, fill or insert your pod, let a new coil soak for a few minutes, then take slow, gentle puffs. The steps below take about ten minutes.

Charge the battery

Use the cable that came with the kit and charge it fully before your first session. Stay nearby while it charges.

Prepare the pod

For a prefilled kit, remove the seal and click the pod in. For a refillable kit, fill the pod through the fill port and stop below the maximum line.

Let the coil soak

Wait five to ten minutes so the cotton absorbs the liquid. This step prevents a burnt taste.

Take your first puff slowly

Draw for two to three seconds. If you vape MTL, hold the vapour in your mouth for a second, then inhale.

Adjust

If the hit feels harsh, try a lower strength. If you still crave cigarettes, try a higher one.

Use it daily

The NHS advises that you use your vape every day to help you switch fully from cigarettes.

What side effects should you expect at first?

Some new vapers cough, feel a dry mouth or throat, or get a mild headache during the first few days. The NHS lists these as common side effects and notes that small changes, such as a different strength or a different way of inhaling, usually help. Drink water, take slower puffs and avoid chain vaping.

How Do You Look After a Vape and Stay Safe?

Keep your vape safe by using the correct charger, never leaving it charging overnight, and storing e-liquid away from children and pets. Replace your coil or pod as soon as the flavour fades.

How often should you change your coil or pod?

Most coils last between one and two weeks, depending on how much you vape and which e-liquid you use. Sweet flavours tend to wear coils faster. Replace the coil when you notice a burnt or flat taste. Browse vape coils that match your device, and always check the compatibility on the product page.

How do you charge and store a vape safely?

  • Use the cable supplied with your device, or a quality replacement.
  • Do not leave a vape charging unattended or overnight, which is NHS advice.
  • Keep your vape out of direct sun and away from hot cars.
  • Do not carry a loose vape in a pocket with keys or coins.
  • Store e-liquid and pods out of reach of children and pets, because swallowing nicotine can cause poisoning.

For cables, cases and spare parts, see our vape accessories.

What UK Vaping Laws Should Beginners Know?

UK vaping law sets an 18+ age limit, a 20mg/ml nicotine cap, a 2ml tank limit and a 10ml bottle limit for nicotine e-liquid. It also bans single-use vapes.

  • Age: you must be 18 to buy a vape or e-liquid.
  • Nicotine strength: the maximum is 20mg/ml (2%).
  • Tank and pod size: a maximum of 2ml.
  • Bottle size: nicotine e-liquid comes in bottles of up to 10ml. Nicotine-free shortfills can be larger.
  • Single-use vapes: banned from sale since 1 June 2025.

Rules change, so check the latest guidance on GOV.UK before you buy. Every product we sell at The British Vapes is intended to meet current UK requirements, and you can read our frequently asked questions page for delivery, returns and product help.

How Much Money Can You Save by Vaping?

Vaping usually costs far less than smoking once you buy your kit. The NHS estimates that vaping costs about a third as much as smoking.

To work out your own saving, multiply your weekly cigarette spend by 52 for your yearly total. Then add up the cost of a kit, a few e-liquid bottles a month, and a coil or pod every one to two weeks. Your running cost depends on how much you vape and which format you choose. Refillable kits with nic salt e-liquids are typically the cheapest to run, while prefilled pods trade a little extra cost for convenience.

What Mistakes Do New Vapers Make?

The most common beginner mistakes are choosing the wrong nicotine strength, picking a device that is too advanced and mixing cigarettes with vaping. Each one is easy to avoid.

  • Choosing too low a strength. If your cravings stay strong, you will probably go back to cigarettes. Increase your strength rather than giving up.
  • Starting with a DTL mod. A powerful device with large clouds is hard to use at first and can feel harsh for a smoker.
  • Not vaping often enough. The NHS advises that you use your vape as much as you need to manage cravings.
  • Ignoring the coil. A worn coil gives a burnt taste. Change it early.
  • Continuing to smoke. The NHS notes that you only get the full benefit of vaping if you stop smoking completely.

Common questions

Beginner's Guide To Vaping: Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to start vaping?

You need a vape kit, an e-liquid with a suitable nicotine strength and a charging cable. A prefilled pod kit includes the e-liquid, so you only need the kit itself. A refillable kit needs a separate bottle of e-liquid. Add spare pods or coils so you never run out. Our vape kits and e-liquids collections cover everything you need.

Is vaping safer than smoking?

Yes, the NHS says nicotine vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it is not risk-free. Vape aerosol contains far fewer toxins than cigarette smoke, and it has no tar or carbon monoxide. The long-term effects are not yet known, so non-smokers and under-18s should never vape.

What nicotine strength should a beginner use?

Most beginners who smoke daily start with a 10mg to 20mg nic salt, while light smokers often start with 5mg to 10mg. Match your strength to how much you smoke, then adjust after a few days. You can compare options in our nic salts range.

What is the best vape for beginners in the UK?

A simple MTL pod kit is the best choice for most beginners in the UK. It is small, easy to use and mirrors the feel of smoking. Choose a prefilled pod kit for zero maintenance, or a refillable pod kit for lower running costs. See our vape pod kits to compare options.

How long does a vape coil or pod last?

A coil usually lasts one to two weeks, and a refillable pod lasts a few weeks, though both depend on how much you vape. Replace them as soon as the flavour tastes burnt or flat. You can find matching vape coils and vape pods for most popular devices.

How much does it cost to start vaping?

Starting costs depend on the kit you choose, plus the price of e-liquid and spare coils or pods. Entry-level pod kits are affordable, and running costs are usually much lower than smoking. The NHS estimates vaping costs about a third as much as smoking once you own the kit.

Are disposable vapes still legal in the UK?

No. Single-use vapes have been banned from sale and supply in the UK since 1 June 2025. Reusable vapes with replaceable pods or refillable tanks remain legal. Our disposable alternatives are reusable devices that give a similar experience.

How old do you have to be to buy a vape in the UK?

You must be at least 18 years old to buy a vape, e-liquid or any vaping product in the UK. Retailers can ask for proof of age, so keep valid ID ready when you order or collect.

Why does vaping make me cough?

New vapers often cough because the vapour is warmer, drier or stronger than they expect. A lower nicotine strength, slower puffs and a tighter MTL draw usually help. The NHS lists coughing as a common early side effect. If it continues, speak to a stop smoking adviser or your GP.
